YHY592J is one of a handful of the legendary Bristol RE-type single-deck buses is still fully licensed to carry fare-paying passengers.

New to the Bath Country Services division of the Bristol Omnibus Company in January 1971 as fleet number 1212, it worked from Bath Garage until withdrawn by the privatised “Badgerline” company in 1988. It was then sold to Hastings & District and operated on the South Coast until withdrawn with engine problems in 1990. It was kept by a group of enthusiastic managers and staff and was repaired to enable it to attend many rallies and shows before being finally laid up with more engine problems around 1998.

It then disappeared from public view until 2010 when purchased by North Somerset Coaches. Now as part of the “heritage” fleet, she is available to hire for weddings and special events and is used occasionally in normal passenger service.

The bus is we believe one of only three “bus” RE vehicles still licensed for PSV use, the others being with Dreadnought Coaches in Northumbria and locally with our friends at ABUS in Bristol. At the moment, we think YHY is the only one of the three actually used regularly in passenger service!
